Seminar Curriculum, Times and Dates
Taiji Foundational Practice
Friday, July 11th – 7pm to 10pm
Fundamental concepts and training practices that help to establish the cornerstone of a good Taijiquan practice. This seminar will look at the central, critical practices of Taijiquan from structure and neigong training, to basic techniques, to application and if time permits, we may even be able to begin the start of the Chen Panling taiji form. Luo Dexiu Laoshi’s Taijiquan training comes from the Chen Panling style of Taijiquan, known not only for its syncretic approach to the training of Taijiquan, but also for its depth and understanding of the essence of the Taijiquan approach to training and combat. Whether you are new to Taijiquan, a practitioner of other health, martial and mind/body systems, or a more experienced practitioner of the art, this seminar will help your training and understanding of the arts.
Baguazhang’s Black Dragon Swings Tail
Saturday, July 12th – 10am to 1pm
This seminar will introduce the short palm changes from Gao style Baguazhang’s Black Dragon Swings Tail. Although they are one of the critical and more advanced circling practices from the Gao Bagua system, the forms themselves are outwardly simple. This seminar is suitable for all participants, whether you have experience in the system or none at all, everyone will come out of it with more understanding of the breadth contained in the circle walking practices and its place in the system of Gao style Baguazhang. This seminar will cover the training of the short forms themselves as well as concepts and practice of their use.
Xingyiquan’s Monkey Form
Saturday, July 12th – 2:30pm to 5:30pm
Train the form, concepts and fighting methods from this famous animal form of the internal fighting art of Xingyiquan. Although xingyi is known for its direct and devastating attacks, the monkey form introduces practitioners to a more playful and evasive nature of attack and defense. Throughout the history of the art of Xingyiquan, a great many of its famous “smaller” masters had specialized in the monkey form. This seminar will cover the form, concepts and fighting methods of this agile animal. The seminar is suitable for all participants.
Bridging the Gap
Sunday, July 13th – 10am to 1pm
This seminar will cover entering to clinching range to throwing from an internal martial arts perspective. It’s endemic in this age of martial arts that the ranges of fighting are trained separately and often with different arts. This seminar will provide an excellent introduction to how the traditional internal fighting arts, particularly Baguazhang, train the full spectrum of stand-up fighting. From dominance in the striking range, to smooth entering and control in the “clinch” range, and finally to the finishes and throws, this seminar will cover how to meld all of these ranges and skills in one smooth continuum. If you just want to see an introduction to how the internal arts approach combat or whether you want to smooth out your stand-up game and bridge the gap between the different ranges of combat, this seminar is for you.
Baguazhang Throwing Methods
Sunday, July 13th – 2:30pm to 5:30pm
Learn the throws, trips and standing control in the clinch from Gao style Baguazhang training methods. Baguazhang is famous for its devastating throwing techniques and in this seminar we’ll get a chance to look at their training, techniques and application. This seminar will also be a natural extension of the “bridging the gap” seminar from the morning. Participants must be familiar and comfortable with falling and rolling, as well as having the ability to train ego-free in order to maintain a safe training experience for all involved.
